Elective Courses

All students take elective courses, and find that there are more courses than they have time for during their two years of study.

Faculty at Winterthur teach courses on historic interiors, twentieth century decorative arts, and Victorian culture. A course on preindustrial craftsmanship includes a behind-the-scenes field trip to Colonial Williamsburg to work with artisans in the Department of Historic Trades. Students often work with curators on independent study courses, researching segments of the collection for future exhibitions.

The University of Delaware is internationally known for its contributions to the study of material culture. Faculty from the Departments of Anthropology, Art, Art Conservation, Art History, the Center for Historic Architecture and Design, English, History, the Museum Studies Program, Sociology, and the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture are participants in the Center for Material Culture Studies, a multidisciplinary coordinating group that seeks to promote collaborative opportunities to study material culture.

Many Fellows take one or more courses in the Museum Studies Program at the University of Delaware to gain more training in museum management, collections management, exhibitions, historic properties, internships, and museum education.

The Center for Historic Architecture and Design (CHAD) has a distinguished reputation for its work in historic preservation, GIS and CAD systems, and cultural resource management.

The University Museums has a fine teaching collection of works on paper, photographs, and ethnographic material. The Paul R. Jones collection is one of the nation's finest collections of African American art.

Graduate students in the Departments of Art History, History, and the Ph.D. Program in the History of American Civilization often take courses with Winterthur Fellows; they also run the Material Culture Symposium for Emerging Scholars (MCSES) each spring that draws presenters from across the country to give papers on their research. This student-run conference is only one of many extra curricular and internship opportunities available to Winterthur Fellows.
