Apply online!
Application Process for S.O.S.
If you are interested in applying to become a victim advocate with S.O.S., please read this page completely and then click on the "Online Application Form" button at the bottom to complete the application form. You must click on the "Submit" button in order for your completed application to be submitted. Note: if you complete the online form when we are not in an active application process, we will hold your application over until the next application process begins.
The volunteer members of S.O.S. welcome anyone interested in becoming a victim advocate. We are seeking women and men interested in providing support for survivors of sexual assault and their family and friends, as well as providing education for the community. Applicants do not need to have studied rape or sexual offense. We provide training. We are looking for people who can listen to and understand the wide range of feelings that accompany this very traumatic issue, and convey that understanding back to others.
Participation in S.O.S. includes being "on-call" to assist survivors via our 24-hour crisis service. We also want your help in presenting programs or leading discussion groups in the residence halls, classrooms and Newark community to dispel myths, misunderstandings, and mis-communications which surround the issues of sexual assault and intimate partner violence.
Our application period is now OPEN.
DEADLINE: Applications are due by Friday, October 28, 2011 at 5:00pm.
When we are in an application period, you can complete our online application or pick up a hard copy at Wellspring: Student Wellness Program, 231 South College Avenue, (the white house next to Morris Library).
Interviews will be held in early November and notifications made by end of November.
The interviewing process consists of up to two interviews with S.O.S. members; applicants will be interviewed by current S.O.S. members and may be asked back for a second interview. For ease in scheduling, the form asks applicants to list the names of any current S.O.S. members whom they know. Our goal is to arrange interviews with people whom applicants do not yet know. Please allow one full hour for the interview, though the entire hour may not be needed. Interviews provide a casual opportunity for us to begin to get to know the applicants and for applicants to ask any questions they may have about S.O.S.
Training is critical and thus, if an applicant cannot commit to all training sessions, she or he cannot be accepted as an S.O.S. member.
Each applicant must be able to attend all training sessions in order to be considered. In the event of inclement weather for these weekends, we will postpone if necessary. Training is extensive and serves to: develop the group as a trusting team; cover the critical information you need to be an effective victim advocate; provide you with the practice necessary to prepare you for beeper duty; and prepare you to be able to conduct educational sexual assault programs. Training is mandatory for new volunteers, which means that your attendance is required at all of the following training sessions. Details regarding meals, housing, and training locations will be provided to you prior to the first training session.
Winter 2012 MANDATORY Training Dates:
Fri, Jan. 13, 2012: 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Sat, Jan. 14, 2012: 9:00am - 5:00pm (Breakfast & Lunch provided)
Sun, Jan. 15, 2012: 9:00am - 4:00pm (Breakfast & Lunch provided)
Fri, Jan. 20, 2012: 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Sat, Jan. 21, 2012: 9:00am - 5:00pm (Breakfast & Lunch provided)
Sun, Jan. 22, 2012: 11:00am - 4:00pm (Lunch provided)
Note to Seniors: It is S.O.S.' policy not to accept graduating seniors UNLESS you know you will remain in this area after graduation for at least one more semester. Often it takes until mid-way through Spring semester for newly trained volunteers to start taking the beeper. Therefore, it is not a good investment of our time and resources to train new people who cannot then serve the organization for at least 2 semesters. It is also a poor investment of your time and energy if you are unable to get a fair amount of experience after training. If you have additional questions about this policy, please call me to discuss.
If you have read all of the above information about the application process, you may now complete the
Online Application Form.
If you prefer not to complete the application online, you can print & complete a hard copy version, and submit at Wellspring by the deadline listed above. We thank you for your interest in S.O.S.! If you have any questions about the application process or training, feel free to contact S.O.S. via email at wellspring@udel.edu, by calling Angela Seguin at 831-3457, or by stopping by Wellspring at 231 South College Avenue.

Film: "Miss Representation"
Trabant Theatre
A documentary by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at 2011 Sundance Film Festival and aired on Oprah Winfrey Network, looks at the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence. It exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty, sexuality, and appearance rather than their intelligence. Following the film will be a speaker who will share her personal struggle with an eating disorder. Sponsored by National Eating Disorders Awareness Council, for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and the Blue Hen Leadership Program, and co-sponsored by S.O.S. and Wellspring.
Project Impact: My Relationships, My World (Part Two)
Trabant MPR C
What message are you sending with your event flyers, Facebook events, and other marketing materials? Your publicity tells individuals more than the date, time and location of your event. Your flyers can tell a person what your organization/event stands for, values, and promotes. This program will help you understand how marketers sell certain messages through their products and how to deconstruct those messages. You will also develop the skills needed to create publicity that promotes equality, respect, and healthy relationships. *Note: You do not have to attend Part One to attend Part Two. Sponsored by Wellspring: Student Wellness Program and the Prevention Subcommittee, a joint subcommittee of the Delaware Victims Rights Task Force and the Domestic Violence Task Force of Delaware. This program counts as part of the Blue Hen Leadership Program. Contact Susan Luchey to register your attendance at this program or to register for BHLP.
21st Annual Crime Victims' Tribute with Guest Speaker Kathleen Bonistall
Bus leaves from Trabant Univ Ctr at 5:30pm. Event takes place at the Dover Sheraton, 1570 North Dupont highway, Dover, DE 19901
The 21rst Annual Crime Victims’ Tribute is part of Delaware’s recognition of National Crime Victims Rights Week, April 22-28, 2012. The Tribute honors crime victims who have died and those who continue to struggle daily with the aftermath of their own or a loved one’s victimization. There are many displays such as the memorial wall filled with artwork, poems and letters written by victims, survivors and friends, and other displays in which victims are able to openly express their thoughts and feelings. Participants can bring their own letters or art pieces to add to the displays. Victims’ advocates throughout the state display resource materials to assist victims in their healing journey. This year’s speaker is Kathleen Bonistall, mother of UD student Lindsay Bonistall who was raped and murdered in her off-campus apartment in May 2005. The Bonistall family founded PEACE OUTside Campus, the Lindsay Bonistall Foundation to promote peaceful, safe living environments off-campus. Mrs. Bonistall will talk about how the crime has impacted her life and share a message of hope for all victims, survivors, advocates and law enforcement. Part of UD's Sexual Assault Awareness Month. FREE BUS provided by Student Activities & Programs will leave Trabant at 5:30pm but you must REGISTER to RIDE.
