The art of engineering

“The fairest thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”

— Albert Einstein, “The World As I See It”

OUR STUDENTS | Engineering is often misunderstood as a discipline driven solely by function and practicality, unconcerned with aesthetics. But the same scientific inquiry that drives progress and innovation can also bring surprising and often awe-inspiring beauty.

Each year, UD’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering invites graduate students to submit research-related artwork for the Art in Materials contest. The competition celebrates and showcases the creative and experimental nature of science and engineering and challenges students to visually convey the intrinsic beauty of scientific research.

These images—representing advances across a wide range of research areas, from photovoltaics, polymers and composites to biomaterials and nanotechnology—encourage engineers and non-engineers alike to appreciate the beauty of research and the art of engineering.
