RECENT AND NOTABLE FACULTY AWARDS

Suresh Advani, George W. Laird Professor and chair of mechanical engineering, has received the American Society for Composites Outstanding Research Award.

Karl Booksh, professor of analytical chemistry; George W. Luther, III, Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Studies; and David C. Martin, Karl W. and Renate Böer Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, have been named 2015 fellows by the American Chemical Society, the largest scientific society in the world. Fewer than 1,000 of the society’s nearly 158,000 members have been distinguished with this honor.

David Burris, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Burt L. Newkirk Award, given to a person under 40 who has made notable contributions to research or development in the field of tribology.

Jeff Buler, assistant professor of wildlife ecology, has been presented the 2015 H.R. Painton Award from the Cooper Ornithological Society for his work in radar analysis of bird migration.

Susan Conaty-Buck, assistant professor of nursing, one of 12 nurse practitioners from across the nation selected by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners for its leadership program.

Thomas H. Epps, III, Thomas and Kipp Gutshall Associate Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and associate professor of materials science and engineering, has received the 2015 Owens-Corning Early Career Award by the Materials Engineering and Sciences Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Steve Goodwin, associate professor of behavioral health and nutrition, is a 2015 recipient of the American School Health Association’s Distinguished Service Award.

John W. (Jack) Gillespie Jr., Donald C. Phillips Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of the Center for Composite Materials, has been named a fellow of the Society for Advanced Materials and Process Engineering. Since its inception in 1982, the society has designated only 147 individuals as fellows.

Iva Obrusnikova, associate professor of behavioral health and nutrition, has been awarded the G. Lawrence Rarick Research Award by the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities in recognition of her contributions to advancing physical education and recreation for individuals with disabilities.
