Surviving Chemistry
The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry, a textbook written by Michael Rosen, AS09, while he was a student at the University, is hitting the big time.
Cengage Learning, a leading educational content, software and services company, has obtained the rights to the 186-page textbook, which Rosen, now 27 and a dentist in Baltimore, self-published at 21.
He saw the need for such a book after being recruited by James A. Wingrave, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, to tutor fellow students. The experience gave him special insight into “where students get confused, the typical mistakes that students tend to make and the types of tricks that students fall victim to on chemistry exams.”
“There is no escaping the horrors of the sophisticated science vocabulary and the frightening equations,” the “A” chemistry student wrote in the original preface of the book. He called his book an “easy-to-read ensemble of tips, techniques and tricks to mastering general chemistry.” With more than 6,000 copies sold nationwide, Cengage Learning gained book rights this fall.
