Former Blue Hens score national lacrosse honors

SPORTS | Two former UD men's lacrosse standouts have been selected by Inside Lacrosse magazine as members of the 12-player first team of the 2000s decade.

Alex Smith, who set nearly every NCAA faceoff record in leading the University team to the 2007 national semifinals, and John Grant, who led the 1999 Blue Hens to the NCAA quarterfinals and was selected the national player of the year, were named by the magazine in its December 2009 issue.

In 2008, the two were the top vote-getters in an online voting contest to pick the all-time greatest players in Blue Hen men's lacrosse history. The contest was part of the "60 Years of Delaware Men's Lacrosse" celebration.

That same year, Grant and Smith, who at the time were teammates on the Rochester Rattlers, were named to the All-MLL team by Major League Lacrosse.

Grant also was selected as the league's offensive player of the year and Smith was selected the face-off specialist of the year.

Grant currently plays for the 2009 MLL champion Toronto Nationals, and Smith plays for the Washington Bayhawks.
