4590 Research Counsel/Advisor (Level 16) Research Office

QUALIFICATIONS:  Juris Doctorate degree and member of a State bar in good standing required. Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office preferred. Undergraduate and graduate degree(s) in science or engineering; previous experience with or membership in the National Association of College and University Attorney’s (NACUA); and three years of job related experience preferred. Requires the highest level of legal ethics and professional standards. Requires effective interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated knowledge of engineering and research techniques. Ability to work independently and with others. Demonstrated knowledge of legal terminology. Ability to analyze and review contracts and legal documents and negotiate effectively. Ability to work effectively on several projects simultaneously. Knowledge of contracts, agreements, settlement procedures and documentation. Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information. Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures. Knowledge of contract and grant preparation and management. Continual improvement and increase knowledge of intellectual property law, contract law, etc. as well as various University rules, regulations, policies, and organizational practices that affect the day- to-day operations of the Research Office and the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Associate Provost, perform a variety of duties in the Research Office related to legal issues associated with the academic research enterprise. Monitor and direct sponsored contract activities. Research a variety of legal issues involving intellectual property, contract and regulatory affairs. Interact with faculty and staff to assist and further Research Office objectives and resolve contractual disputes. Perform duties that require both knowledge of the law and an in-depth working knowledge of University policies, procedures, and practices. Exercise independent judgment. The decisions of the incumbent frequently carry significant legal and financial consequences for the Research Office and the University. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
