From the President

The Board of Directors bids a fond farewell to Jon Manon who served the club well for the past three years. We thank Jon for his insight into the parents' perspective and wish him well. We welcome Bill Webster, who was elected to the Board of Directors in May. Bill will be assuming the Internal Audit role for the Club.

Thanks to all who helped to make the Philadelphia Areas competition an extremely successful event. We received many compliments from the officials on this well-run competition. Our kudos also to the Pond for their help in hosting the competition.

Just a reminder that the Club continues to have a busy competition season ahead. The 2002 Liberty Summer Competition will be held in July at the Pond. This competition is sponsored by the Association of Philadelphia Area Club of which UDFSC is a member. In August, the Club hosts the 2002 National Collegiate Skating Championships at the University of Delaware. If you are interested in helping at either competition, please contact the Club at (302) 831-4686, or via e-mail at ud-fsc@udel.edu.

Congratulations to all of the recent graduates who are Club members. I've seen the names of many Club members under the listings of academic honors winners in the local high schools, colleges, and universities. It's nice to see our skaters excelling both academically as well as athletically.

Alice Rakowski, President

2002 USFSA Governing Council

The club sent 5 delegates to the USFSA Governing Council in May. The Governing Council is the annual meeting of all USFSA Clubs where rule changes are discussed and voted upon by the delegation. Governing Council affords the member clubs the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the Association.

As expected, there was lively discussion about the proposed re- alignment of sections and regions. One of the goals of the re-alignment proposal is to provide a more equitable representation of skaters at the regional, sectional, and national competitions. While the proposal presented by the Strategic Planning Committee was not approved by the Governing Council, the Committee will continue to refine the proposal and consider alternate proposals for future presentation at Governing Council.

A summary of the actions of the 2002 Governing Council may be viewed on the USFSA web site under News at www.usfsa.org.

Chevrolet Scholastic Honors Team

The USFSA is committed to assisting athletes in identifying funding to support their pursuit of skating. There are a number of funding options (Memorial Fund, Chevrolet Scholastic Honors Team, Eligible Skaters Compensation Agreement, etc.) which are potential sources of income for skaters. To learn more about these options, contact Tanja Slack, USFSA Athlete Funding Coordinator at USFSA Headquarters on 719-635-5200 or at tslack@usfsa.org). Information is also available on the USFSA web site under USFSA programs/athlete funding at www.usfsa.org.

Chevrolet Scholastic Honors Team

Applications are now available on the USFSA web site for the Chevrolet Scholastic Honors Team. This award is available for athletes who are Juniors or Seniors in high school who have distinguished themselves in both figure skating and high school academics. The deadline for entry is September 2002. The UDFSC has had a number of recipients of this award in the past few years including two student-skaters in 2002. If you have difficulty locating the application on the USFSA web site, please contact the Club office at (302) 831-4686. We will help you get a copy of the application.

Free Ice

Did you know that you can earn free ice privileges for Club Ice (5-6:30 p.m. on Sundays)? For each 45-minute Club Ice session that you monitor, you earn a corresponding free Club ice session for you or for your family member who skates. We currently have a regular monitor for Club Ice, but we are in need of backup monitors to fill in for our monitor when she cannot be there. If you are interested in becoming a monitor for Club Ice, please contact the Club Office at (302) 831-4686.

Membership

ATTENTION: Your USFSA membership expires June 30, 2002. If you are planning to compete or take tests this summer your must renew your membership as soon as it is sent to you. If you have not received your application, please contact us immediately.
