Welcome to all of our visiting skaters this summer. We hope you are enjoying the program at the Training Center. The Club also offers ice on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a walk-on fee.
The UDFSC sent a large contingent to Governing Council where we learned about upcoming efforts to automate membership processing and registration.
Forms for regional applications are now available on-line for downloading from the USFSA web site at www.usfsa.org. Remember that the deadline is 9/1 for regional competitions - so, you'll want to start completing your forms NOW.
Finally, best wishes to Johnny Weir and Tiffany Scott & Philip Dulebohn who will be competing at the Goodwill Games in Australia!

Congratulations to incumbents Dianne Nichols and Rosemary Haines and to newly elected board members Patti Weir and Bonnie Dulebohn. Best wishes to Pat Stapleford, who completed her second term on the board and chose not to run again.
We are delighted to report that the following UDFSC coaches were nominated for PSA Coach of the Year: Jeff DiGregorio, Pam Gregory, Priscilla Hill, and Karl Kurtz. Jeff DiGregorio and Pam Gregory were recognized as PSA Developmental Coaches of the Year.
The USFSA membership fees have risen so we must raise our membership fees too. The last time the USFSA raised its rates, the UDFSC did not pass on those increases. UDFSC home club membership will now be $65, associate memberships will be $45, second family membership will be $30, and new members after the half-year will be $35. All costs are per member per year.
The USFSA membership year will now change to July 1 through June 30.
If you need to cancel a test, you must do so in writing a minimum of a week before the test to receive a refund. Put your written cancellation notice in the UDFSC lockbox in the Rust Arena.
Please put your USFSA number on your test application. If you have not received it yet put "applied."
When completing your pair or dance test application, please be sure to include the partner's name. Directions are on the back of all test applications.
Applications for Souths are available on the Iceworks Skating Club website at http://www.iceworkssc.org/. Also available on-line at the USFSA website is the Scholastic Honors Team application, an award for high school junior and senior skaters who have excelled academically. The UDFSC has had many Scholastic Honors team recipients, including two last year. Go to the Forms section of www.usfsa.org to download the application, which is due by 9/15.
Join us on Sundays in the Rust Ice Arena from 5:00 - 5:45 p.m. for a dance-preferred session and from 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. for a freestyle-preferred session. The walk-on cost to UDFSC members is $10.00 per session or you may purchase a ticket for $80.00, which reduces the cost to $8.00 per session.
The club is looking for monitors for club ice on Sundays from 4:45 - 6:30 p.m. While this is a volunteer position, your skater's walk-on fee will be waived for each session you volunteer. Call Patti Weir on (302) 831-4686 to volunteer.
Parents may want to screen skater fan mail to be sure there is no inappropriate content. Fan mail sent to the USFSA will be forwarded to the skater with a warning letter attached.

Interested in UDFSC synchronized skating teams? Synchronized skating is a choreographed routine skated in unison by 12-24 team members. Teams are assembled by skill level and USFSA age restrictions. Four UDFSC skaters now skate on college teams that went to Helsinki, Finland for Worlds. Come out and see what it is about! Contact the UDFSC on (302) 831-4686.
The primary purpose of food is to provide the body with a variety of nutrients that are essential to the physiological and biochemical functions of the body. There are six major classes of nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Nutrients perform three major functions: (1) provide energy for metabolism (2) build and repair tissue (3) regulate body processes.
Carbohydrate foods are the best source of energy for athletes. It is recommended that 60-70% of an athlete's total caloric intake is from carbohydrates. However, most athletes consume a diet in which only 45% of total caloric intake are from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates provide the energy the body needs to exercise, train and compete.
The two major types of carbohydrates are simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are simple sugars composed of a single or double glucose molecule. Sources are honey, candy, soda and sweets. Simple carbohydrates supply energy to the body but do not provide essential nutrients. Complex carbohydrates are made-up of long strains of glucose molecules. Sources include breads, cereals, pasta and rice. Complex carbohydrates provide energy for the body and also provide vitamins, minerals and fiber. The vitamins and minerals from the complex carbohydrates provide the substances required for metabolic processes.
Dietary fat is essential for proper body functioning. Fat aids in the digestion and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Fat is also required for the production of cell membranes and body energy. During light, continuous exercise the body acquires 50% of its energy from fat. However, stored fat requires 30 to 60 minutes of exercise to become available as fuel while exercising.
Thirty-eight percent of the average American's caloric intake comes from fat. The American Heart Association recommends that no more than 30% of an individual's total caloric intake should come from fat. Only 25% of an athlete's total caloric intake should come from fat. The type and amount of fat eaten can significantly affect athletic performance.
Unsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature and has been shown to decrease the risk of coronary artery disease. Corn oil, canola oil, olive oil and other vegetable oils all contain unsaturated fats.
Saturated fat is solid at room temperature. It promotes the build-up of fatty-deposits on artery walls, increasing the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Saturated fats are found in animal products.
Twelve to fifteen percent of an athlete's total caloric intake should come from protein. The recommended daily allowance of protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight for an adult. Therefore, if an athlete weighs 70 kilograms, he or she should consume 56 grams of protein. Most people consume 2 times the recommended amount of protein daily. One must remember that excess protein is stored as fat.
Proteins are made-up of nine essential and 13 non-essential amino acids. Non-essential amino acids are produced in the body, while essential amino acids must be obtained through the diet. Amino acids are building blocks for protein and are essential for the growth and development of the human body. Protein builds repairs and maintains all body tissues. Proteins are not a good source of energy and should not be used as an energy source.
If counting calories remember:
1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 calories
1 gram of protein = 4 calories
1 gram of fat = 9 calories
1 gram of alcohol = 7 calories

The 2001-01 skating year was once again a successful one for our members who competed in National and World competition. The Club sent representatives to the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, U.S Junior Figure Skating Championships, U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships and Adult National Championships. Skaters also represented the Club at the World Championships, the Junior World Championships and ISU Grand Prix and ISU Junior Grand Prix competitions.
The UDFSC continued to look for opportunities to support our National competitors. This year, the Club financed 50% of the cost of new warm- up suits for all of the National and Junior National competitors. Additionally, the Club purchased new team jackets for the National Synchronized Skating competitors.
The Club responded to our members' request for test sessions that would not interfere with the school day. This year, we scheduled several Sunday test sessions at our affiliate, the Pond. We plan on continuing to include Sunday test sessions.
We continue to revamp and expand our web site. Membership and test applications can be printed from the web site. We have begun posting Test Session schedules so those testers who have electronic access can see their scheduled test time. Our goal is to make the web site a convenient source of information for our current and prospective Club members.
Although our membership and Club ice attendance numbers are slightly down this year, we are looking forward to the upcoming Olympic year where our existing members are joined by some new faces. We remind skaters and coaches that our Club ice sessions provide an excellent opportunity for skaters to schedule lessons, get in some practice and socialize with other Club members.
I also want to thank all of our hard-working volunteers who allow the Club to operate so smoothly. The members of the Board of Directors are to be commended for their conscientiousness and dedication.
Membership - Lee Brogley, VP for Membership
Membership is the biggest and one of the most important activities of the Figure Skating Club. All club-related activities hinge on membership and our liaison with the USFSA. The University of Delaware is one of the largest Figure Skating Clubs with over approximately 465 current members.
Testing - Dianne Nichols, VP and Testing Co-Chair
Coordinating testing is a big activity of the UD Figure Skating Club. We'd like to thank the parent and skater volunteers who helped make our test sessions run so smoothly. A total of ten (wow!) test sessions were held this past year with 506 tests skated and 379 passes (75%). The tests included 18 pairs tests, 183 moves tests, 90 freeskating tests, and 189 dance tests. We processed 405 trial judge sheets.
Club Ice - Sandy Shacklady-White, Director for Club Ice
The 2000-2001 season showed a consistent turnout at our Sunday night club ice sessions. A total of 1,027 skaters participated in club- sponsored ice with an average of 14 skaters per session. Skaters of a variety of levels and disciplines have been sharing 45-minute sessions in the Rust Arena. The first session is from 5:00-5:45 p.m. and is dance-preferred. The second session runs from 5:45-6:30 p.m. and is freestyle-preferred. All UDFSC members are welcome to join us.
Synchronized Team Skating - Betty Garvin, Synchronized Team Skating Liaison
Synchronized Team Skating is a growing sport at the UDFSC and throughout the country. Our synchro coaches continue to build new and existing teams with enthusiasm and excitement for each competition season. Four teams representing the UDFSC competed at Nationals in Colorado Springs at the World Arena in March 2001. The University of Delaware Figure Skating Club is well represented at competitions in many divisions.
The Pond - Monica Dabney, UDFSC at the Pond President
With the UDFSC, the Pond hosted 3 successful Sunday morning test sessions. Synchronized skating teams continue to grow at the Pond and a new team, the Diamond Chips," was established this year. The Delaware Dazzle placed first at Easterns. All teams represent the UDFSC. Last year the Club was able to offer Club ice sessions at the Pond as well as at the U of D ice surfaces.
Congratulations to the following UDFSC competitors. Medalists are noted. If you competed in an international event that is not listed, please let us know by calling (302) 831-4686 or writing to us at ud-fsc@udel.edu.
