Women's Ice Hockey Nationals

Becker, Newtown receive second team all American honors

The University of Delaware Women’s Ice Hockey team competed at the DII Nationals ranked as the #3 team in the East.

The team first took on Villanova and despite a slow start, managed to pull off a 2-1 victory.

The next game was against Northern Michigan -- the #2 ranked team in the West and highest scoring team in the league. UD was down 3-0 for 15 minutes into the first period but battled back to end the first down just 3-2. Delaware tied the game 11 minutes into the second period and went ahead a few minutes later. Northern Michigan tied it back up and the battle continued with both teams going scoreless until a penalty was called on UD at 1:28. Northern Michigan took the shot from the point, and it was deflected into the net with just 58 seconds left to win the game.

“This was the team’s best game of the entire year,” said Coach Ken Deming.

Emily Becker, goalie, and Mary Clare Newtown, defense, were awarded second team all Americans; awards given based on skill and GPA. “Considering there are 42 teams within the league, this is a great accomplishment,” Deming explained.

Olivia Tarca was awarded the Off Ice MVP by the league for her contribution to the team and community.
