Awards celebrate student contributions to residence halls
With the arrival of spring comes the official opening of the University of Delaware Residence Life and Housing’s Student Leadership and Service Awards (SL&SA).
These awards are Residence Life and Housing’s opportunity to recognize the amazing efforts and contributions student make within the residence halls every day. Nominations are invited from all students, faculty and staff.
Students can be nominated for 10 different awards, including:
• Community Service Initiative recognizes a community-service oriented program of the academic year that was developed and executed primarily by residence hall students.
• Community of the Year recognizes any community: floor, multiple floors, building, complex, Special Interest Housing or Living Learning communities whose individual members have been significantly involved in the growth and development of the community.
• Citizen of the Year recognizes an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to his or her community above and beyond what is typically expected of residential students. This award should recognize a resident who is a great role model, good neighbor, and has positively impacted the residential experience of those around him/her.
• Community Chair recognizes an individual who has served in a leadership capacity in the Community Chair role and has demonstrated leadership in his/her floor community.
• Connection to Residence Life and Housing Mission and Values recognizes a student who embodies the Residence Life and Housing values of Excellence, Stewardship, Inclusion, Community, Students and Partnership and who has partnered with other students or staff to make positive contributions to their residential community.
• Environmental Sustainability Initiative recognizes an initiative created by residence hall students to promote and enhance environmental sustainability on campus within the residence halls, within the local community or state of Delaware, and possibly beyond.
• Inclusive Leader of the Year recognizes the efforts and contributions of a student in advancing the UD commitment to embrace, enhance and celebrate diversity in their floor, building, and/or complex community.
• Multicultural Initiative recognizes an initiative created by residence hall students to promote and enhance multicultural awareness on campus within the residence halls, within the local community or state of Delaware, and possibly beyond.

• Student Initiated Program recognizes programs and events that are student initiated and implemented in the halls with community building in mind. These programs can include but are not limited to Student Initiative Fund (SIF) and You + 2 events.
A final, eleventh award, Partnership, recognizes an individual, organization or department whose work and efforts to collaborate have contributed to enhance the residence hall experience through day to day interactions with students in the residence halls.
All UD students, faculty and staff are encouraged to write nominations for the SL&SA awards. The nomination process is open until April 23, and the nomination form can be found on Student Central.
This year, Residence Life and Housing is introducing a student appreciation day for all students and partners nominated for SL&SA. The winners’ awards ceremony will be held May 12 in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center.
Questions about the SL&SA awards or the nomination process should be emailed to Tierra Fields, Academy Street complex coordinator.
