Opening event of Winter Session program explores diversity through art
Over 50 people came out to the Perkins Student Center on Jan. 5 for Dive Into Art, the opening session of the Dive In+: Diversity Institute, to hear spoken word performances by University of Delaware senior Daniel Farmer, I.N.X, UD alumni Gemelle John of the Class of 2015 and Joshua Morris of the Class of 2013, as well as musical performances by Khayden Arts.
Dive In+ is a series of Winter Session events designed to introduce students to various aspects of diversity through art, expert presentations, dialogue and experiential learning and reflection, imagined and realized by a staff team in Residence Life and Housing.
“We address issues of ability status, sexual and gender identity, intercultural awareness and race,” said Jessica Cornwell, complex coordinator, Residence Life and Housing. “We hope that students leave with more awareness of the ways social identity intersects with their lived experiences and more willingness to engage in what could be uncomfortable conversations.”
Students who participate in Dive In events and complete an “exit ticket” assessment at the end of the event are entered into a raffle for an Apple watch or a $100 gift card to the UD Barnes and Noble Bookstore.
Each event also has door prizes and food.
“There were over 25 raffles for door prizes at Dive Into Art,” said Cornwell. “The prizes are a tangible reminder of the event and our appreciation for our students.”
