UD online program addresses patient risk and safety
Researchers at Johns Hopkins recently calculated that more than 250,000 deaths each year are due to medical error, making it the third leading U.S. cause of death behind only heart disease and cancer. Across the industry, patient safety, health outcomes and performance improvement challenges are among the most important issues facing health care systems.
The University of Delaware's Health Care Risk Management Online Course addresses this critical need with a program designed to provide health care professionals with the background and skills for the specialty of risk management and patient safety.
“Keeping patients safe is at the very heart of health care risk management, and every day presents new opportunities and challenges for risk specialists,” says Sharon Whidden, program director and lead instructor of the UD program.
Now in its ninth year, UD’s Health Care Risk Management Course is offered completely online. The upcoming spring program takes place March 6-May 13.
Health care risk managers often enter the field from a variety of disciplines. UD’s Health Care Risk Management program will be of interest to registered nurses, legal nurse consultants (LNCC), quality/utilization review nurses (CPHRQ) and safety officers, as well as other health-related professionals wishing to gain a background in risk management and patient safety.
“Risk management professionals are an invaluable resource within any health care system, working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team toward the goal of safe patient care delivery,” added Whidden, a clinical risk analyst with expertise in patient safety, incident analysis, and risk reduction. Her more than 30 years of nursing practice includes risk management, nursing leadership, staff education, case management, and home and critical care.
Health Care Risk Management Online begins March 6. Learners progress through the course at their own pace within the 10-week completion schedule. Participants must be registered nurses or other health-related professionals with at least three years’ experience in the field.
Program topics include the role of risk manager; standards, laws, regulatory affairs and patient safety; enterprise risk management and corporate compliance; risk issues in non-health-care settings; employee/employer risk; and risk financing, insurance and contracts.
Interested individuals are invited to attend a virtual information session on Monday, Feb. 20, 6-7:30 p.m. The virtual info session is free and will be held completely online via web conferencing, but reservations are requested. For details and to RSVP, visit this website.
This noncredit program is offered through the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies.
