UD Police alert campus to scam involving photos taken from social media sites
University of Delaware Police advise members of the campus community to be aware of a series of social media harassment incidents affecting college students across the country that is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“There have been no cases reported here,” said Capt. Jason Pires of UD Police. “But we are taking every precaution to keep our campus community alert and informed. We are in contact with the FBI to ensure we have the latest information about their ongoing investigation.”
According to the FBI, an unknown individual has been using anonymous email, phone messages and web postings to threaten and harass women students, many of them athletes, at institutions of higher education around the country. In some cases, students’ photos have been taken from social media sites and then altered to make the students appear nude. These altered photos have been posted on websites, along with videos of individuals who look like the victim. In some cases, the victim has been threatened.
UD Police urge members of the community to immediately report anything suspicious by calling 302-831-2222.
The campus community is reminded that the University’s Sexual Offense Support (S.O.S.) program provides crisis support and victim advocacy for anyone who experiences sexual assault, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence or stalking. S.O.S. is is available 24/7 by calling 302-831-1001 and pressing 1 or online at www.udel.edu/sos. To learn more about survivor options and resources, visit www.udel.edu/sexualmisconduct.
