Erasmus is deeply interested in the cultural heritage of South Africa’s earliest inhabitants, and the soundscape in the exhibition honors the Goringhaikona chief Autshumato, who was imprisoned by the Dutch settlers in 1659.
Allen’s installation is inspired by his ongoing analysis of the beloved Afrikaans folk song Daar Kom Die Alibama (There Comes the Alabama), the origins of which are contested but which is purported to concern the Confederate raider Alabama, which docked in the Cape in 1863 and 1864.
A reception will follow the presentation.
Those who plan to attend are asked to RSVP via email at universitymuseums@udel.edu or by calling 302-831-8037.
The exhibition will be the focus of three University Museums’ Perspectives series talks, which will be held in the Mechanical Hall Gallery as follows:
- Tuesday, Sept. 22, 12:30-1:15 p.m., Kaila Schedeen, graduate student, art history.
- Monday, Oct. 5, 12:15-1 p.m., Julie L. McGee, University Museums curator of African American art and associate professor of Black American studies.
