3:35 p.m., Sept. 4, 2015--The University of Delaware will host the 13th annual National TRIO/McNair Scholars Research Conference and complementary graduate school fair on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8-9.

“The annual conference and graduate school fair is an important opportunity for current and prospective TRIO Scholars, as well as for members of the community who are interested in attending graduate school,” said Kimberly A. Saunders, executive director for TRIO Pre-College and Student Success Programs at UD, who is overseeing the coordination of the events.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

Opening events and campus tours are scheduled Thursday, Oct. 8. The research conference and a poster competition will be held from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, at the Perkins Student Center.

The graduate school fair will be held from 4-6:30 p.m., Friday, at the Trabant University Center. It will feature more than 80 graduate programs from across the United States, including programs from UD.

Carl McNair, brother of the late physicist and astronaut Ronald E. McNair, will be the keynote speaker for a conference banquet and research awards ceremony scheduled at 6:30 p.m., Friday, at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

The McNair Scholars Program is named in honor of Ronald McNair, who was killed in the 1984 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. Its goal is to prepare and encourage talented low-income and first-generation college students historically underrepresented in graduate school to expand their educational opportunities by enrolling in a doctoral degree program.

Saunders said faculty members who have students interested in graduate school or in entering the research presentation competition – or who are interested in applying for the University’s TRIO programs – are encouraged to make nominations by Sept. 10.

There is a registration fee for the conference, with registration discounts and scholarships available.

The graduate school fair is free and open to the public.

Judges and moderators are needed for activities Friday, Oct. 9. Those interested in volunteering can write to mcnairscholars@win.udel.edu.

Details can be found at the conference website.
