3:43 p.m., Sept. 1, 2015--Photographs have the ability to transport us to faraway places, evoke memories and emotions, and inspire us to discover new things.

People today take photographs of everything from friends, food and pets to architectural and landscape features.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Delawareans and University of Delaware students are invited to enter photos in the 2015 Coast Day photography contest that demonstrate the 39th annual Coast Day theme, “Discoveries: on land, in the air and at sea.”

Entrants may share an unlimited number of photo entries on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DECoastDay.

Photographers can approach the nature topic in a variety of ways — highlighting discoveries viewed out of an airplane or automobile window; coastal scenes; wildlife; underwater photos; textural images of shells, rock or bark; and more.

To enter:

1. Snap a photo depicting a nature discovery on land, in the air, or at sea.

2. Share the photo on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DECoastDay. Leave a brief description of the photo (location, what you are discovering) in the caption. On Instagram, be sure to include the hashtag #DECoastDay in the photo description and not the comments section.

3. Make sure that privacy settings are set so that the post is publicly visible.

Photographs may have been taken anywhere in the world, but they must have been taken after last year’s Coast Day (Oct. 5, 2014). All entries that meet the contest criteria will be digitally displayed at Delaware Coast Day. The winning entry and first runner-up who submit the photos that most closely represent the theme will receive a $100 and $50 Visa gift card, respectively.

Photos must be posted no later than 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Coast Day, the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) and Delaware Sea Grant’s premier celebration of the sea, is held annually on the first Sunday in October at UD’s Lewes Campus. The annual education festival and showcase for Delaware’s rich marine resources attracts thousands of attendees every year.

Attendees can wander through tents featuring educational exhibits, tour research vessels, sample the region’s best seafood and develop a deeper appreciation for the sea and marine stewardship.
