UD two-factor authentication

2FA protects University's UDelNet accounts from growing threats

TEXT SIZE

10:48 a.m., Oct. 14, 2015--The year 2015 has been an especially dangerous one. University of Delaware Information Technologies (IT) has noticed a rise in the number of phishing attacks on the University community. Even more disturbing, there’s a corresponding rise in the number of spear phishing attacks, which steal UD logos, names and other information and use them to create convincing fake emails.

In response, IT and the University administration have partnered to emphasize the importance of using two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect UDelNet accounts.

June 6: UDid It! Picnic

All UD faculty and staff members are invited to attend the annual UDid It! employee appreciation picnic, set from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, June 6, on The Green.

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

2FA works by requiring a user to enter a security code in addition to his or her UDelNet ID and password whenever he or she logs in to certain University web services. Even if a user’s password is somehow compromised, nobody else will be able to log in to the account without that second factor, which is sent through text, phone call, or fob.

Enrolling in UD 2FA is simple. Those who haven’t already done so are encouraged to log in to My UD Settings and follow these steps to sign up.

Employees who sign up for 2FA protection for their UDelNet accounts will be eligible to enter into the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2015 security contest held by IT. Those who already are signed up for 2FA can enter the contest right away. Those who are not signed up for 2FA yet can do so today.

The campus community is invited to stop by the 2FA booth at the IT Tech Fair, which will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Trabant University Center Multipurpose Room.
