11:48 a.m., Oct. 26, 2015--The University of Delaware's new budget model was the main topic of discussion at Provost Domenico Grasso's town hall meeting, held Oct. 20 in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

Grasso opened the meeting and announced the implementation of the University's new strategic plan, Delaware Will Shine, is set to begin under the leadership of Charlie Riordan, deputy provost for research and scholarship, and Lynn Okagaki, interim deputy provost for academic affairs. He noted that more than 70 individuals have volunteered or been nominated to assist with the implementation effort.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

"The University is going to be committed to excellence in everything we do and equally committed to being consequential," Grasso said.

"We are looking for interdisciplinary spires of excellence where we can continue to make a difference in the world," he said.

Grasso introduced Kathy Dettloff, chief budget officer, to discuss the current and new budget models. She began her presentation by outlining the University's current revenues and expenses and contrasted the existing budget model against a new simpler All Funds budget model, announced Oct. 6.

The new system rewards sound management, empowers decision-makers and contributes to a higher quality, more competitive and more prominent University, she said.

Dettloff said the key to the new model is simplicity, transparency and predictability.

The new model will run in parallel to the existing budget model in 2016-17 and will be fully implemented in 2018, she said.

For additional details, see her Powerpoint presentation, which is posted on both the Office of the Provost and the Budget Office websites.

Questions about the new budget model should be sent to bdgtoffice@udel.edu.

The next town hall meeting is scheduled at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Multipurpose Room C of the Trabant University Center.
