9:31 a.m., Oct. 5, 2015--The University of Delaware Library has announced a new one-case exhibition featuring a very recent acquisition in Special Collections. To Separate the Body from the Machine is a recently published artist’s book by Beldan Sezen, and it will be on display through Nov. 20 on the first floor of Morris Library.

The distributor’s description explains the idea behind the book: “Beldan Sezen works as a caretaker for a man who is living with a paralyzed body. Sezen's intentions with this work are to visualize confrontations and limits with such a paralyzed body and its often hidden surprises in dealing with ways to move.” The artist achieves her goals in a way that is both sensitive and visually engaging.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

In creating How To Separate the Body from the Machine, Sezen produced sketches and then used a silkscreen technique to transfer the images and text to a recycled copy of the Brooklyn Rail, a monthly periodical devoted to the visual arts.

The copy acquired by University of Delaware Library Special Collections is one of only eight that were produced by the artist. The pages of the book will be turned periodically to give viewers a fuller experience.

This new acquisition joins the hundreds of artists’ books held by UD Library Special Collections.

The exhibition will be curated by Curtis Small, assistant librarian in the Special Collections Department. An online version will also be available.

This exhibition ties in with 25th anniversary of the American’s with Disabilities Act, on display on the first floor of Morris Library until Dec. 15.
