Speed of Internet connections increased for most UD campus locations

TEXT SIZE

3:28 p.m., Oct. 21, 2015--The University of Delaware signed an agreement with Princeton Hosted Solutions on Oct. 1 for an extensive upgrade to the University's Network. This upgrade will leverage the significant increase in statewide fiber being installed by Lightower Fiber Networks (formerly Fibertech).

The University is upgrading its wide area network from a Verizon TLS network to a dedicated fiber network that will allow dramatic increases in network speed for most University locations. Princeton Hosted Solutions, Lightower and IT Network and System Services will begin connecting UD sites to the new network in January with all work due to be completed by the end of February.

This upgrade will increase the available bandwidth across nearly all UD locations:

  • "Core" locations on UD's Newark campus are being upgraded to 10 gigabits per second (gbps).
  • The Lewes campus connection will be upgraded to 5 gbps.
  • After the upgrade, sites currently connecting at 10 megabits per second (mbps) will be connect at 50 mbps or faster (e.g., Hagley Museum, Georgetown, Delaware Technical Community College Dover).
  • Most current 100 mbps sites will be connected at 200 mbps.
  • The Pennsylvania Avenue Wilmington Campus connection will be upgraded to a full gigabit.

These network upgrades are made possible by investments from the state's Delaware Broadband Fund.
