Helping students live and lead in a diverse, global world is a prominent thrust of the University’s strategic plan, Delaware Will Shine. One of the ways to help students achieve this outcome is through the successful completion of the multicultural education requirement.
At the Oct. 28 event, Jones will offer some ideas about where and how faculty teach and how students demonstrate these desired outcomes.
In 2014, Jones and Barret Michalec, associate professor of sociology at UD, explored a sample of multicultural education designated courses. They found that the courses offered opportunities for students to effectively engage with multicultural content and practices. In order to more clearly understand the skills, understandings and knowledge students might acquire, Jones also adapted and developed a tool for defining and viewing these diversity competencies.
