University of Delaware alumni activities are focused on light

10:11 a.m., Oct. 8, 2015--Light is the common theme for special activities available to University of Delaware alumni next week.

Alumni are invited to join distinguished speakers and faculty members from UD’s College of Engineering and College Arts and Sciences for a delightful evening at Longwood Gardens to view the immersive sound and light spectacle Nightscape, designed by Blue Hen Ricardo Rivera of Philadelphia’s Klip Collective, on Thursday, Oct. 15.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

The following day, Friday, Oct. 16, at UD, the “Green Light: Prospects in Lighting Design and Technology” symposium will bring together industry leaders, designers, artists, researchers and scholars from the humanities and sciences to discuss the innovations in lighting and their impact across disciplines.

Marco Bevolo of Philips Lighting’s City.People.Light project will discuss new trends in his keynote address and UD architectural historian Sandy Isenstadt will give an overview of the development of urban illumination. 

Technology and adaptation are the subjects of talks by Peter Y. Ngai of OLED Lighting at Acuity Brands Lighting, Giana Phelan of OLEDWorks, Don Slater of the London School of Economics and Matt Doty of UD's Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Artist/designers Anne Militello of Vortex Lighting and Rivera of Klip Collective will discuss their use of light as an artistic medium. Rivera designed the current Nightscape installation at Longwood Gardens.

Other coming activities include the following:

Sunday, Oct. 18, 2 p.m.: Miniature golf at Pier 25. The New York City Alumni Club will host miniature golf at Pier 25, offering a great view of the Hudson River.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 5:30 p.m.: Philadelphia Flyers hockey. The Philadelphia Alumni Club will host a pre-game reception at McFadden’s Ballpark followed by an NHL game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Dallas Stars at the Wells Fargo Center.

Thursday, Oct. 22, 6:30 p.m.: North Jersey happy hour. Alumni are invited to happy hour at Teak on the Hudson in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Saturday, Oct. 24, 5 p.m.: Susquehanna fall foliage cruise. Blue Hens are invited to enjoy a fall foliage cruise aboard the Pride of the Susquehanna, boarding in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Monday, Oct. 26, 5:30 p.m.: Arizona football viewing party. The Phoenix Alumni Club will host an NFL viewing party at UD’s Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens battle the Arizona Cardinals. The event will be held at Ernie’s Bar and Restaurant in Scottsdale.

Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 a.m.: Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum. The Philadelphia Alumni Club invites Blue Hens and their families to join them for a day at the Please Touch Museum.

Saturday, Nov. 14, 1 p.m.: Pittsburgh ‘Grains to Glass’ tour. The Pittsburgh Alumni Club will offer a “Grains to Glass” tour at the East End Brewing Company.

Monday, Dec. 14, 4:30 p.m.: Miami Dolphins tailgate. The South Florida Alumni Club will hold its fifth annual Miami Dolphins outing, as the team hosts the New York Giants in a game at Sun Life Stadium.
