GOLD CIRCLE AWARD

UD Courtyard hotel wins Marriott International guest service award

Marriott International has recognized the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware campus hotel as a 2015 Gold Circle Award winner for outstanding guest service. In 2015, the Newark hotel’s guest service satisfaction scored in the top 10 percent of all 1,100 Marriott Courtyard hotels.

Since opening in 2004, the Newark Marriott has earned major awards each year as a consistent leader in guest service. This is evidenced by the direct feedback of guests, guest surveys and social media comments. In 2008, the hotel was ranked No. 2 in the global Marriott Courtyard brand and received the highest-possible Diamond Award.

“It was a true honor to accept this prestigious guest service award on behalf of the staff of the Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware,” said William A. Sullivan, managing director. “This team of dedicated associates earns this award every day”.

The Marriott Courtyard is owned by the University of Delaware and managed by Shaner Hotels.

In addition its status as a fully operational Marriott Courtyard hotel, the hotel is also home to the Hotel Management Lodging Module Practicum required for students majoring in hotel, restaurant and institutional management (HRIM) at UD’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. In this unique program, 50 students each semester are immersed in the hotel’s daily operations to gain first-hand experience.

“It is a pleasure to have the students work directly with Bill Sullivan and the hotel staff to assist in providing excellence in guest service and to represent the University of Delaware,” said Sheryl Kline, chair of the department.

Academic classes are held in the hotel’s high-tech ALICE (Advanced Learning Interactive Classroom Environment) classroom, recently built and donated by the Marriott Foundation.

The classroom is equipped with seven flat screen monitors, numerous glass writing surfaces and two high-definition video camera systems for teleconferencing, allowing educators to use the classroom as both a traditional lecture classroom and a collaborative student-centered workspace.

The 2015 Gold Circle Award is now proudly displayed at the registration desk of the Courtyard Newark.
