2:33 p.m., May 3, 2016--Wayne Batchis, associate professor of political science and legal studies, will speak about the First Amendment from 4:30-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, in 320 Gore Hall on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will also include a discussion session and will feature a launch of Batchis’ new book, The Right’s First Amendment: The Politics of Free Speech and the Return of Conservative Libertarianism, published in March by Stanford University Press.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

In the book, Batchis examines how the concept of constitutional free speech rights — an issue closely associated in the 1960s with American political liberalism — has been adopted and co-opted by conservatives. At the same time, he says, free market conservatives have come to embrace the once-unknown concept of freedom of commercial expression.

The Right’s First Amendment explores what these changes mean for the future of First Amendment interpretation.

The talk and discussion are sponsored by UD’s Legal Studies program.
