8:46 a.m., May 11, 2016--The Child’s Play, Learning and Development Lab at the University of Delaware is working to answer questions about how children acquire language, learn through play and develop spatial skills, and invites members of the community to participate.

The project is directed by Roberta Golinkoff, Unidel H. Rodney Sharp Chair in the School of Education, and has studies for children as young as 6 months up to 6 years of age that explore various aspects of the language-learning process.

Research Stories

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

The project also has studies that investigate how children develop spatial concepts through play.

Parents and their children can be part of the research and help UD scientists understand how children take these giant leaps in development.

During a 30-minute visit to the laboratory, located in the Willard Hall Education Building on UD's Newark Campus, friendly research assistants play with children to help them feel comfortable in new surroundings.

Then children view a brief video or play a short game to help researchers understand how they learn about the world. Parents stay with their children the entire time.

"If it sounds fun and interesting, you're not alone -- many families have been participating for years," a representative of the program said.

To sign-up for participation, visit the website or call 302-831-2073. Prospective participants can also email the lab at childsplaylab@gmail.com with any questions.
