11:44 a.m., March 7, 2016--The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) Ambassadors student group will host a free screening of the film Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story at 7 p.m., Monday, March 14, in the Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory atrium.

Just Eat It looks at systemic obsessions with expiration dates, perfect produce and portion sizes and reveals the core of an issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe as nearly half of our food is thrown in the trash.

Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

Filmmakers and food lovers Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin dive into the issue of food waste from farm through retail and all the way back to their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on food that has been discarded.

In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture are shocking. But as Baldwin’s addictive personality turns full tilt toward food rescue, the “thrill of the find” has unexpected consequences.

A favorite of the Canadian festival circuit in 2014, the film has been described as smart, snappy and eye-opening by reviewers. According to Variety, this “hugely entertaining study of America’s culture of excess…will leave audiences gobsmacked.”

The DENIN Amabassadors are a small group of specially selected volunteers from across the University who assist DENIN in reaching out to students. They help to create a sustainable campus by communicating scientific information effectively through special events and promotions. Waste generation and processing on campus has been a focus of the group since their formation in 2012 when their first activity was to launch a bottled water awareness campaign on campus.
