University Student Centers, which include the Perkins Student Center and the Trabant University Center, are the community centers of the University.

Serving students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests, the centers enhance student life and complement the academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social and recreational programs.

Through volunteerism, committees, and student employment, University Student Centers offer first-hand experience in citizenship and educate students in leadership and social responsibility while providing opportunities for personal growth and development

Alison Hill, administrative assistant with University Student Centers, described Becker as being an important asset to her department.

“Shirley has dedicated 41 years of service to UD, and most of it in University Student Centers, and she is still going strong,” Hill said. “There is nothing that she does not do here.”

Department staff members look to Becker as the go-to person on HR processes and procedures issues, Hill said.

“We all depend on Shirley to guide and instruct us on all aspects of HR,” Hill said. “We would be lost without her.”

Becker, who handles department financials, HR polices and procedurals while providing additional services for students and staff members, said she was both surprised and honored at being nominated for the award.

“The greatest joy for me over the past 40 years has been working with the students,” Becker said. “Being part of a great team at University Student Centers also has given me the opportunity to provide students and staff with encouragement, experience and support to grow and learn.”
