1:10 p.m., July 31, 2015--Mary C. Miller, a longtime academic adviser at the University of Delaware’s Associate in Arts Program in Georgetown, died July 15 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Delaware.

A memorial service for students, alumni, faculty and staff is being planned for September or October, to be held on the Georgetown campus.

Ms. Miller, 68, of Milton, was an adviser to Associate in Arts students for 20 years and was well-known and respected by students, faculty and staff for her dedication and commitment to students and her hard work on their behalf.

“Mary was like a mother to our students, watching over them, making sure they stayed on track,” said J. Richard Bacon, faculty coordinator of the program in Georgetown. “She was always willing to go the extra mile to help a student.”

She was also loved and respected, Bacon said, for her cooperative work with the faculty and staff of both UD and Delaware Technical Community College, where the Associate in Arts Program is located.

“She was skilled in keeping the channels of communication open between the two institutions,” Bacon said. “She will be greatly missed.”

Born in Cumberland, Maryland, Ms. Miller was the daughter of the late William "Boots" and Mary (Cumiskey) Miller. She graduated from Catholic Girls Central in Cumberland and the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore. She received a master’s degree in education from Loyola College in Maryland and a second master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Oregon.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Miller; a godson, Thomas Larson; a brother, Greg Miller; and two nieces. Ms. Miller is survived by two goddaughters, Laura Larson and Alyssa I. Houghtling; seven siblings, Patricia Wigger (husband Tom), Theresa Fuller (husband Harry), Nancy Richard, Marilyn Kisner (husband Daniel), John Miller, William Miller (wife Dorothy) and Norm Miller.
