High Performance Computing Symposium scheduled for Jan. 27

3:55 p.m., Jan. 21, 2016--University of Delaware researchers are invited to the first High Performance Computing Symposium session of 2016, scheduled Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. in Faculty Commons (116 Pearson Hall).

The session will kick off with an announcement about the proposed support policies end of life strategy for the Mills HPC Community Cluster through its final year of operation.

Chronic wounds

UD's Millicent Sullivan and Kristi Kiick have received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that could provide a new approach to the treatment of chronic wounds.

Prof. Heck's legacy

The American Chemical Society is highlighting the legacy of the late Nobel laureate Richard Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Delaware with a digital tribute on its publications website.

Arthi Jayaraman, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and her colleagues in the Jayaraman Research Group will cover how they use UD's High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and molecular simulations to design polymers that are used in materials like solar cells, tires, and DNA delivery for therapy. 

The presenters will discuss how different aspects of their projects have required different supercomputing needs including the use of GPU computing. They will also highlight how they resolved issues like bottlenecks in molecular dynamics simulations by employing highly-parallel, GPU-accelerated HOOMD-blue software, and how they implement OpenMP and OpenMPI to obtain high performance and efficiency by optimizing the total number of nodes and the communication between them.

The presentation will be followed by an hour-long open forum for researchers to ask the IT-Research Computing staff questions and find answers, brainstorm and share ideas with other researchers. The IT-Research Computing staff will also be making an announcement about the final year of support and retirement for Mills.
