Feb. 10-May 15: Mineralogical acquisitions
'Recent Acquisitions' on view at University's Mineralogical Museum
8:33 a.m., Jan. 26, 2016--The University Museums of the University of Delaware will display recent acquisitions and ongoing exhibitions Feb. 10-May 15 in the Mineralogical Museum in Penny Hall.
This semester the University’s Mineralogical Museum features three newly acquired specimens.
Events Stories
June 5: Blue Hen 5K
June 6-9: Food and culture series
First is a specimen of chalcocite from the Flambeau Mine near Ladysmith, Wisconsin, the result of responsible recovery and preservation of specimens during the copper mine’s brief period of operation in the 1990s. This is one of the larger specimens recovered.
Second is a rare red orange crocoite specimen from the Adelaide Mine in Tasmania. Crocoite is lead chromate; the high lead content gives crocoite its bright luster. Finally, a bright green pyromorphite crystal group on matrix from China’s Daoping Mine is another example of a brilliantly colored lead mineral.
The Museum also continues its ongoing display of mineral specimens from the Irénée du Pont Collection – the foundation of the Mineralogical Museum – along with gemstones and their natural crystals, gemstone boxes, and hardstone carvings of animals.
Sharon Fitzgerald, Mineralogical Museum curator, will give a Curator’s Talk titled “Tales from the Underground” on Wednesday, March 16, at the museum. There will be refreshments at 5 p.m., followed by the talk at 5:30.
The Mineralogical Museum is open from noon-8 p.m. Wednesday, and noon-5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. It is closed during all UD breaks and holidays.
Admission to all University Museums exhibitions and events is free and open to the public.
