Stanton graduated from the University of Georgia before trading bonds in Chicago for three years.

In 2010, after moving to New York, he started the photography blog Humans of New York with the initial goal of photographing 10,000 New Yorkers. Since, he said the project has taken on a different character as he has collected quotes and stories from the people he has met.

Today, his work has been the subject of a New York Times bestselling book, Humans of New York Stories, and the social media sites have more than 16 million followers.
