Feb. 12: 'Thinking Geographically'
Association of American Geographers president to deliver invited lecture
11:32 a.m., Feb. 1, 2016--Sarah Witham Bednarz, president of the Association of American Geographers, will deliver an invited lecture at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, in 116 Gore Hall on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.
The lecture, titled “Thinking Geographically,” is free and open to the public.

Bednarz is a professor of geography at Texas A&M University. She served as associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Geosciences from 2008 to 2014. Her research interests center on the intersection of teaching and learning geospatial technologies and spatial and geographic thinking for a range of educational levels.
Bednarz was principal investigator on two major curriculum and educational research projects, Mission Geography (NASA) and Advancing Geospatial Skills in Geography and Spatial Sciences (AGSSS).
She is co-author of the national geography standards, Geography for Life (1994 and 2012) and participated in the National Research Council’s Learning to Think Spatially project. Additionally, Bednarz helped develop the National Assessment of Educational Performance framework in geography.
Bednarz holds a University Professorship for Teaching Excellence. She is a previous recipient of the National Council for Geographic Education’s George J. Miller Award and the Association of American Geographers Gilbert H. Grosvenor Honors for Geographic Education.
Most recently she co-chaired the Geography Education Research Committee of the Road Map for 21st Century Geography Education Project.
The lecture is hosted by the Department of Geography, which is housed in UD’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment.
