Edward C. Ratledge, associate professor and director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, School of Public Policy and Administration, and Joan E. Jacoby, executive director of the Jefferson Institute of Justice Studies, are co-authors of The Power of the Prosecutor: Gatekeepers of the Criminal Justice System, published by Praeger (2016)
Jan H. Blits, professor emeritus of education, has recently published Rome and the Spirit of Caesar: Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" (Lexington Books). It is his ninth book.
William W. Boyer, Charles P. Messick Professor Emeritus of Public Administration, Department of Political Science and International Relations, and Edward C. Ratledge, associate professor and director of Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, School of Public Policy and Administration, are co-authors of Growing Business in Delaware: The Politics of Job Creation in a Small State, published by the University of Delaware Press (2016).
Honors
The MelUDees student a cappella group won the Mid-Atlantic quarterfinal for the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella held Feb. 6 at Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey. MelUDees soloists Anna Gill and Trey Williams also won honors for outstanding soloists for their songs Bottom of the River and You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You, respectively. This is the first time the group has won a quarterfinal and the MelUDees next will be competing in the semifinals at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia on March 26.
Presentations
Bahira Trask, chair of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, has been invited to speak at a second event at the United Nations. She will present on “Strategies for Strengthening Families for Sustainable Social Development” at the United Nations 53rd session of the Commission on Social Development, which is sponsored by the UN NGO Committee on the Family, on Feb. 11. She also will speak Feb. 9 on a panel organized by the Permanent Mission of the state of Qatar, in collaboration with Doha International Family Institute, providing the academic perspective on “Work-Family Balance, Social Development, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda: The Recognition, Need, and Implementation of Culturally Specific Policies.”
Service
Ram Rawat, associate professor of history, was nominated and elected to the South Asia Council (SAC) of the Association of Asian Studies for a three-year term, beginning this year through spring 2019. SAC is one of the four area councils that collectively serve as a major policy body of the Association of Asian Studies. Founded in 1941 for the study of Asia, it currently has 8,000 members worldwide.
Cindy Holland, assistant director, Career Services Center, has been elected treasurer of the executive board of the American Association for Employment in Education for the 2016-18 term.
