Jan. 9-10: Winter Faculty Institute
December 01, 2016
‘Inclusion. Engagement. Transformation… by Design’ is WFI theme
The 2017 Winter Faculty Institute (WFI) at the University of Delaware will be held Monday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center.
This year’s WFI theme is “Inclusion. Engagement. Transformation… by Design.”
Course design is an essential teaching responsibility for most people who teach at UD. Whether continuing an established course or creating a new course, there are important design considerations for developing a successful course.
The workshops at WFI will focus on creating courses that allow all students to succeed by being inclusive, engaging and transformative. Registration is free to everyone at UD.
Registrants can choose to participate in one of two tracks: the Hands-on Course Design Intensive track and the Topics in Course Design track. Both tracks will begin with the featured guest workshop “How Learning Works: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments” by Michele DiPietro, Kennesaw State University, and co-author of the book How Learning Works: 7 Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching.
The Hands-on Course Design Intensive track is designed for instructors who are ready to design or redesign a course they will be teaching in the immediate future. The focus on course design will include multiple activities as part of one cohesive workshop across the two days.
Participants will use a backward design process to develop the beginnings of a course syllabus with peer-reviewed learning outcomes, a major assessment, and considerations for a supportive classroom community for all students.
Registrants for this track are expected to have a real course to prepare and to attend all sessions of this track on both days. (Register)
The Topics in Course Design track is a more flexible arrangement that allows participants to sample among ten sessions that address course design. Each of these 10 sessions are led by UD faculty and staff and vary in format. Whether it’s an interactive keynote, panel session, presentation, or hands-on workshop, all sessions are geared to helping you attain your course design goals. (Register)

The Winter Faculty Institute is hosted by partners of Faculty Commons, including the Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning (CTAL), English Language Institute (ELI), IT Academic Technology Services (IT-ATS) and University of Delaware Library.
