Book club to discuss ‘International Student Engagement’ on Jan. 26
The University of Delaware Faculty Commons Book Club will meet at noon, Thursday, Jan. 26, in Faculty Commons to discuss International Student Engagement: Strategies for Creating Inclusive, Connected, and Purposeful Campus Environments by Chris R. Glass, Rachawan Wongtrirat and Stephanie Buus.
Drinks and dessert will be provided. An RSVP is requested.
As the UD community looks forward to welcoming 1,000 more international undergraduate students over the next five years, faculty, staff, teaching assistants and administrators have the opportunity to stop and think about what their arrival means for the campus. Are there ways in which the UD community can help them integrate and engage academically, culturally and socially?
Through their book, Glass, Wongtrirat and Buus provide a platform for discussion about this topic. Their book deftly weaves current research with student voices and practical strategies. They discuss campuses like UD, which are also seeking to enhance student learning for all students through successful integration of international students.
Together participants will explore the authors’ strategies for “creating inclusive, connected and purposeful campus environments.”
Major topics of discussion will include: curriculum and co-curriculum and international students in the classroom, student friendship networks, recommendations for enhancing the student experience and sense of belonging and addressing discrimination on and off campus.
Participants will also discuss taking advantage of collaboration between colleges, departments, programs, and offices, capitalizing upon strengths and identifying areas for growth and change, all of which align with directions the University is already exploring or doing.
Limited free copies of the book will be awarded to participants based upon registration and winners will be contacted via email. Copies may also be purchased at a 30 percent discount from the Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore.
In addition, a printed copy and an eBook version may be available for loan from the UD Library. The library also has a book on reserve behind the Morris Library Circulation and Reserve Desk which can be checked out. The book club reserve course is called FCOM 999 (Faculty Commons Book Club). The loan period is three days in order to make it available to as many borrowers as possible during the next few weeks.
This session will be facilitated by Sophie Le Blanc, postdoctoral researcher, Center for Teaching and Assessment of Learning; Karen Asenavage, associate director, English Language Institute; and Rachel Lapp, Undergraduate Conditional Admissions Program cohort coordinator.
The Faculty Commons Book Club is always looking for facilitators. Those who are interested in leading a discussion or sponsoring a session in the future can contact faculty-commons@udel.edu.
