11:43 a.m., Dec. 15, 2015--The Blended Learning and Seamless Teaching (BLAST) Course Design Institute is a month-long commitment to improving course design for blended/hybrid courses, and will be hosted in January by Faculty Commons at the University of Delaware.

A blended course is one in which a significant portion of the learning activities have been moved online. Teaching a blended course involves developing challenging and engaging online learning activities that complement the face-to-face course.

Throughout the institute, participants will be aided by facilitators Nancy O’Laughlin and Erin Sicuranza, educational technology consultants, in developing effective lesson plans for their individual courses.

BLAST will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 12 to Jan. 28, from 9 a.m.-noon, with additional online components. Register

BLAST will offer a situated experience where participants gain perspectives of both the online student and the instructor.

While participating in both face-to-face and online activities, participants will consider and develop instructional and assessment techniques to incorporate into the design of their own course. Participants will write goals and objectives for their course, create learning modules, and prepare assessment techniques demonstrating how course goals will be met.

The goal of BLAST is to provide participants with knowledge of blended/hybrid instruction and the skills necessary to design or teach a hybrid course. The teaching technologies available at UD offer faculty an opportunity to transform their teaching from presenting information to facilitating a learning experience for their students.

Participants will also be exposed to methods used by other UD faculty teaching blended courses.

BLAST challenges faculty at UD to reflect on how they are teaching and whether it is the best way to deliver content. The experience of this program should result in greater student, faculty and University satisfaction with the teaching and learning process.
