The popular program is free, and is open to UD students, faculty and staff, as well as Newark residents.
Early registration is recommended, as recent academy classes filled up quickly.
The program provides members of the campus community and surrounding community an opportunity to learn more about the activities and procedures UD Police officers follow every day. It also provides the police department an opportunity to hear from the people it serves.
The academy will include both classroom and field instruction on the various responsibilities facing UD Police officers, and the procedures and techniques used by officers in different scenarios.
Attendees will learn about such issues as use of force, defensive tactics, special operations, criminal investigations, evidence gathering techniques and demonstrations by the SWAT Team and K-9 unit. Participants also will have an opportunity to ride along with an officer and engage in target practice.
The program is free, but attendance is limited to 15 and advance registration is required. To register, visit this website.
Registration forms will be reviewed, and those accepted will be required to complete a short application. Those not selected will be encouraged to apply for the next available session.
