University to host National Bike Month events May 12, May 20

8:32 a.m., April 27, 2016--The University of Delaware will host two local National Bike Month events, with activities planned on campus May 12 and May 20.

“Bike Basics in a Minute” will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday, May 12, on the south side of Memorial Hall.

All UD faculty and staff members are invited to attend the annual UDid It! employee appreciation picnic, set from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday, June 6, on The Green.

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

The educational bike-safety program is designed to familiarize new English Language Institute (ELI) students and other UD students with local Newark bike laws and general biking etiquette. There will be prizes, food, free bike lights and helmets, and a casual ride around town at 3.

National Bike to Work Day in Newark will be held from 7:30-9 a.m., Friday, May 20, at Mentors’ Circle on the UD campus, just off South College Avenue between Hullihen Hall and the Morris Library.

The event is organized by the Newark Bicycle Committee, and partners are UD, the city of Newark, the Delaware Department of Transportation and the Newark Bike Project. It is sponsored by downtown business contributors.

Participants will bike in from six Newark locations and the event will include free T-shirts while supplies last, breakfast food, speakers, awards and prizes.

Other Newark area activities include a Mayor’s Fun Ride on Saturday, April 30, to kick off the month. The event will begin and end at the Newark Shopping Center, with registration at 10 a.m., a Family Fun Ride at 10:30 on the Pomeroy and Hall trails, and a Newark Loop Fun Ride at 11. Helmets are required for the rides.

There will be raffles, music by Fish Castle, a children’s skills course, free bike repairs, and bicycle safety information.   

A Bike (and Walk) to School Day will be held May 10 at Downes Elementary School in Newark.

Other area-wide National Bike Month events include:

• May 5, Delaware Walkable Bikeable Summit in Dover.

• May 11, Legislators’ Ride to Dover from various locations, including Pike Creek.

• May 13-15, Wilmington Grand Prix.

• May 18, Ride of Silence in Wilmington, 7 p.m.

Held in May, National Bike Month is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, it provides an opportunity to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and to encourage more people to giving biking a try.
