Rebecca Davis appointed to Organization of American Historians program

1:30 p.m., April 20, 2016--The University of Delaware’s Rebecca L. Davis has been appointed to the Organization of American Historians (OAH) Distinguished Lectureship Program, a speakers bureau and resource that promotes leading historians to various audiences across the country.

Davis, who is associate professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of History, was among 78 new speakers appointed to the prestigious program’s roster for 2016-17.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

They speak to audiences across the country each year and are widely sought for appearances at museums, libraries, universities, community centers, churches, synagogues and other institutions, with their speaking fees donated to the organization. 

The program was designed to promote understanding and appreciation of all facets of U.S. history from the 1600s through the present.

“We thank these historians for their service to the organization and for helping advance our mission,” said Katherine M. Finley, the OAH executive director. “And we congratulate them on achieving this high honor.”

Davis, who joined the UD faculty in 2007, specializes in the histories of gender, sexuality, religion and ethnicity in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries. She has a joint appointment in the Department of Women and Gender Studies.

She is the author of More Perfect Unions: The American Search for Marital Bliss, a history of marriage counseling, social science, religion and American culture in the 20th century.

Davis is currently writing a book about religious conversion and American identity politics in the 20th century and editing a collection of essays on the history of heterosexuality in North America.

A past postdoctoral fellow at the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, she will be an affiliate fellow there during the 2016-17 academic year.
