Through May 2: Art and Syria
'Day Before Tomorrow' event to feature creation and destruction
6:37 p.m., April 28, 2016--The University of Delaware’s international artist in residence will create and then destroy art during a four-day event designed to illustrate the destructive nature of the conflict in his native Syria.
Emad Jano Hemede, a painter and sculptor, will present “The Day Before Tomorrow” from Friday, April 29, through Monday, May 2, in the West Lounge of Perkins Student Center. With audience participation, Hemede will create art and then, at 7:30 p.m. on May 2, destroy it.
Events Stories
June 5: Blue Hen 5K
June 6-9: Food and culture series
The art will be created through a flour design on the floor, symbolizing life in its fragile form. The event is designed to illustrate how the peace and beauty that previously existed in Syria is now shattered by conflict.
The art created will combine Middle Eastern symbols, music and dance and will demonstrate to the audience how difficult it is to create beauty and how fleeting its existence is.
The event will also feature performances by UD Dance Minor students and the Ignite Dance Company, with choreography by Kimberly Schroeder, head of the Dance Minor. The musical piece “Monajat Andalusia” by Syrian composer Mohamad Fityan will be performed.
The event is sponsored by the Art Bridging Cultures program and the English Language Institute.
On May 3, the artist is also participating in final World Kitchen Series dinner, which is free and exclusively for UD undergraduate, graduate, international and English Language Institute students.
About the International Artist in Residence Program
The College of Arts and Sciences’ International Artist in Residence (AiR) Program is designed to promote cultural understanding and to further internationalize campus life through integrating art and artists from around the world into classroom and extracurricular learning.
Each year, AiR hosts at least two international artists, who interact with the University and larger Delaware community through workshops, performances, exhibits and other similar activities while also producing original work. Through these programs, the artist enables UD faculty, staff and students to see the world through their own distinctive eye.
Artists who participate in the program are at various stages in their careers and work in all disciplines, including the visual, performing, literary, technical and interdisciplinary arts.
About the Art Bridging Cultures Series
The Art Bridging Cultures Series is an initiative by UD’s English Language Institute to promote cross-cultural interaction and create a campus in which the lives of students are enriched through meaningful, experiential exploration of diversity.
The increased presence of students from diverse background presents numerous challenges but, more importantly, provides unique opportunities for cross-cultural exchange.
