Events Stories

June 5: Blue Hen 5K

University of Delaware graduates planning to attend Alumni Weekend are encouraged to register for the annual Blue Hen 5K walk and run, which will be held Sunday morning, June 5.

June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

From Monday morning, Sept. 29, until noon on Friday, Oct. 3, participants will wear pedometers and log their steps on a customized Step Tracker. Members of the team finishing with the most steps will win iPad Minis. Prizes will also be awarded to teams that raise the most sponsorship dollars or create the best poster illustrating the theme of cancer prevention.

Participants can register teams of up to four people online. Registration is $15 per person.

Winners will be announced and prizes awarded on Friday, Oct. 3, from 6-8 p.m. at the UD Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus Atrium. Pizza will be served.

Packet pickup will take place at Delaware Running Company, 129 East Main Street in Newark, on Sunday, Sept. 28, from noon-5 p.m. Pedometers, coupons for Main Street deals, and a T-shirt will be included.

“Last year was Walk Away From Cancer’s inaugural event, and we had over 100 students participate,” says Janet Teixeira, executive director of Cancer Care Connection. “I think the best part is there is no extra effort required to compete. Just wear your pedometer and pursue your daily activities.”

“We encourage participants to raise money, although that’s just one aspect of Walk Away From Cancer and is not required to participate,” she adds. “We’re also hoping that students will literally learn to walk away from cancer and other information to help them make healthy choices throughout their lives.”

Several Newark and regional businesses are sponsoring Walk Away From Cancer, including National Education; 2 Fish Group; Aberdeen Assets with Michael Concklin; Wilmington Blue Rocks; Airbase Carpet and Tile Mart Flooring Supercenters; Kimmel, Carter, Roman, Peltz and O’Neill; Subaru; Nurick Law Group; and Unique Impressions.

Many Newark businesses are also contributing prizes and giveaways.  Those who are interested in sponsoring or donating to the event can contact Janet Teixeira at 302-294-8555.

Cancer Care Connection is a free telephone service that helps people affected by cancer on their journey, providing resources and emotional support. They have a Facebook page at Cancer Care Connection and a Twitter page at @CancerCoaches.
