Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Available positions for a February 2015 to May 2015 term include: marketing managers, event managers, fundraising managers and college and student group liaisons.

Upperclassmen interested in fundraising, event planning and nonprofits are especially encouraged to apply

“In return for their service, student volunteers are granted an opportunity to gain unparalleled experience alongside the professionals charged with pursuing the philanthropic goals of the university.” says Lauren Kirchhausen, assistant director of student philanthropy. “Past council members have gone on to find careers in non-profit fundraising and development, inspired by their involvement with the organization.”

Other council benefits include opportunities to network with alumni, a private lunch with UD President Patrick Harker and priority seating at commencement for the executive board.

Since 2002, the council has raised more than $330,000 from 10,000-plus individuals. In the past, donations were directed to specific gifts – such as solar panels for campus buildings in 2009 – however, the council has broadened its scope of impact in recent years.

Now, with 2,200 separate funds, the council has made it possible for seniors to pay tribute to any organization at UD. Among the most popular allocations are the colleges, athletics, study abroad and Greek life.

“You chose to leave your mark on UD with gifts that represent your varied interests, causes and passions,” said Harker to the Class of 2013. “We’re only too happy to celebrate the uniqueness of this class.”

As in years past, seniors are encouraged to make a spirit gift of $20.15 to celebrate their class, as they prepare to join the 165,000 alumni of the University of Delaware.
