12:32 p.m., Sept. 10, 2014--Cengage Learning, a leading educational content, software and services company, has attained the rights to The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry, a textbook written by Michael Rosen while he was a student at the University of Delaware.

At the age of 21, Rosen, now 27 and a dentist and Baltimore resident, self-published the textbook to help chemistry students nationwide understand a complicated topic.

UD ROTC cadets will run from New York City to Miami this month to raise awareness about veterans' affairs.

“What better way to help your peers avoid the same hardship of going through a difficult science college course than to write a book as a student for your fellow students? After witnessing first-hand how difficult some college courses can be, especially those that are required for you to progress in your major, I set out to put a stop to the frustration associated with general chemistry,” said Rosen, whose project was featured by UDaily in March 2008.

Rosen saw the need for such a book after being recruited by James A. Wingrave, UD assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, to lead a workshop in which he worked with fellow students in the subject area.

With over 6,000 books sold nationwide, Cengage Learning saw an opportunity in this simplified chemistry textbook. Written for the students, by a student, The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry tells readers exactly what they need to know while avoiding complicated vocabulary for the general chemistry class.

"At Cengage Learning we are developing products that elevate thinking and engage students. These products include new digital learning solutions that directly help students achieve better course outcomes. Through our partnership with Michael Rosen and The Guide to Surviving General Chemistry we are able to offer learning resources through direct-to-student opportunities that provide help for students when they need it most," said Maureen Rosener, senior product manager for chemistry at Cengage Learning.
