Honors

The American Society for Composites recognized Tsu-Wei Chou, Pierre S. du Pont Chair of Engineering, with the 2014 ASC/DEStech Award in Composites during the society’s 29th Annual Technical Conference Sept. 8-10. Held at the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, the conference was a joint meeting between the ASC and the Japan Society for Composite Materials and marked the continued collaborative research efforts between the United States and Japan. Chou, who joined the UD faculty in 1969, is known worldwide for his pioneering composites work. A founding member of the Center for Composites Materials (CCM), he has worked with a wide variety of materials, including hybrid composites, textile structural composites, flexible composites and nanocomposites. He also is noted for his research team’s development of novel applications for carbon nanotube-based continuous fibers in energy storage devices and composites.

Presentations

Lou Hirsh, retired director of admissions, represented the Admissions Practices Committee of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) in a presentation entitled, “Principles, Ethics, and Shades of Gray,” at the Chief Enrollment Officers’ Forum at NACAC’s 2014 Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Sept. 18-20. The presentation included Jerry Lucido of the University of Southern California and Eileen O'Leary of Stonehill College. Hirsh also participated in a NACAC Conference panel: “Back in MY Day…Emeriti Admissions Professionals on Where We’ve Been and What’s Ahead for the Next Generation of Leaders” with retired colleagues Ted Spencer (University of Michigan), Mabel Freeman (Ohio State University) and Mary Ellen Anderson (Indiana University).

Yasser Payne, associate professor in the Department of Black American Studies, delivered a talk as part of a TEDx Wilmington event in August, describing a street ethnographic research project he organized and led in the Southbridge and Eastside neighborhoods of the city. The talk, titled "Walk With Me: A Community Development Effort," is now available on video at this site. Payne describes his unconventional research method — in which he identified and trained community residents to conduct surveys and gather data — and his findings that black, urban neighborhoods and their residents are more resilient than the way they are often portrayed or perceived. Also, a new documentary by Payne, The Streets of Harlem: How Black Men in the Streets Adapt to Structural Violence, will be screened at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 N. Shipley St., Wilmington.

Martha Carothers, professor of art, presented a paper at the Seventh International Conference on the Inclusive Museum, "On the Walls and Into the Pages," in Los Angeles, on Aug. 4-6.
