7:06 p.m., Sept. 11, 2014--The sun peeking through the clouds. Branches blanketed with snow. Lightning flashing in a stormy sky.

Photographs of nature can be stunning no matter what the weather.

Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Delawareans are invited to enter photos in the 2014 Coast Day photography contest that reflect the theme of the 38th annual Coast Day: “Weather and Climate: On Our Radar.” Entrants may share an unlimited number of photo entries on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DECoastDay.

Photographers may take a wide range of approaches to the topic -- from demonstrating specific weather concepts to conveying the event theme as a whole. Examples of weather concepts that may be highlighted include: clouds, fog, frost, haze, lightning, rain, flooding, storms, rainbows or wind. Or, photos may reflect the impact of a changing climate.

To enter:

1. Snap a photo depicting a climate or weather concept.

2. Share the photo on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #DECoastDay. Leave a brief description of the photo (location, weather concept, etc.) in the caption. On Instagram, be sure to include the hashtag #DECoastDay in the description, not the comments section.

3. Make sure that privacy settings are set so that the post is publicly visible.

Photos may have been taken anywhere in the world, but must have been taken after last year’s Coast Day (Oct. 6, 2013). All entries that meet the contest criteria will be digitally displayed at Delaware Coast Day, and the winning entry and first runner-up, who submit the photos that most closely represent the theme, will receive a $100 and $50 Visa gift card, respectively. Photos must be posted no later than 11:59 p.m., Sept. 30.

Coast Day, an annual educational festival and showcase for Delaware's rich marine resources, is held every year on the first Sunday in October at UD’s Lewes campus. Sponsored by UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment (CEOE) and Delaware Sea Grant, Coast Day attracts more than 10,000 visitors and has won state and national awards for its efforts to promote environmental education and stewardship.
