Campus Stories

From graduates, faculty

As it neared time for the processional to open the University of Delaware Commencement ceremonies, graduating students and faculty members shared their feelings about what the event means to them.

Doctoral hooding

It was a day of triumph, cheers and collective relief as more than 160 students from 21 nations participated in the University of Delaware's Doctoral Hooding Convocation held Friday morning on The Green.

Announcements

George Watson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, announced that John Pelesko, professor and chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, will serve as the college’s interim associate dean for the natural sciences, effective Jan. 1. The current associate dean for natural sciences, Doug Doren, will be on sabbatical leave for the 2015 calendar year. An internal search will be conducted to select Pelesko’s successor as department chair. Watson also announced that Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Chair for the Study of Law and Public Policy, has accepted a two-year appointment as interim director of the School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA), beginning Sept. 1, 2014. Maria Aristigueta, Charles P. Messick Professor of Public Administration, is taking a leave from the director’s position until September 2016, while she serves as president of the American Society for Public Administration. She is continuing as associate director of SPPA during this time.

Presentations

Michele Walfred, communications specialist in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program alumna, has been selected by the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP) to present her research on the social and political significance of Thomas Nast cartoons depicting Chinese Americans at the organization’s national conference, Oct. 9-11, in Philadelphia. The conference is co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University. 

Hannah Lee, senior assistant librarian, Multimedia Collections andServices Department, University of Delaware Library, participated in a panel presentation "Rebranding Librarianship: Building a Knowledge Alliance" on June 29 during the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Las Vegas.

Publications

Cathy Matson, professor of history, has guest edited a special issue and written an introductory essay in the latest issue of Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture. Titled "Representations of Economy: Lithography in America from 1820 to 1860: A Special Issue," the issue features six articles, lavishly illustrated, on the origins and early development of lithography, a distinctive technology in print culture that made it possible to illustrate a great range of printed materials linking producers and consumers together in brilliant color for little cost. The articles in this issue were first presented at the 2011 annual conference of the Program in Early American Economy and Society, organized and hosted by Matson.

Service

Martha Corrozi Narvaez, associate policy scientist in the School of Public Policy and Administration's Institute for Public Administration, has been voted president-elect of the American Water Resources Association, the premier non-governmental organization dedicated to the advancement of multidisciplinary water resources management and research. Narvaez will begin the duties of her new position on Jan. 1, 2015, and will become president of the association on Jan. 1, 2016.
