UD's Impagliazzo recognized as 2014 DAWN Rising Star

12:56 p.m., Oct. 30, 2014--The University of Delaware’s Casey Impagliazzo received the Delaware ACE Women’s Network (DAWN) Rising Star Award at the organization’s annual awards dinner held Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Delaware Technical Community College Stanton Campus.

About 85 people attended the event, including members of the organization and guests who are interested in advancing women in higher education in the state.

National Medal of Science

President Barack Obama recently presented the National Medal of Science to University of Delaware alumnus Rakesh Jain.

Warren Award

Rosalind Johnson, assistant dean for student success in the NUCLEUS Program in UD's College of Arts and Sciences, was presented the John Warren Excellence in Leadership and Service Award during a May 26 ceremony.

Several UD staff members were in attendance as Impagliazzo, communications specialist with University Student Centers, was recognized as a 2014 DAWN Rising Star Award recipient. 

The Rising Star Award is presented annually to at least one woman in higher education in Delaware who has clearly demonstrated the potential to become a leader within the field. Nominees must also demonstrate a commitment to any aspect of higher education and have made contributions in some or all of the following areas: higher education, community service and overall leadership.

Impagliazzo was nominated for the award by Dawn Thompson, UD vice president for student life; Marilyn Prime, director of University Student Centers; and Gil Johnson, associate director of University Student Centers.

They noted that Impagliazzo has revolutionized student marketing through her creative work, and that she has established herself as a dynamic, independent professional and a supportive, enthusiastic team player. 

She is currently working toward a master of education degree in educational technology.

Others honored during the event included Alice Miller, coordinator of student activities at Wilmington University (Rising Star Award Recipient) and Phyllis Brooks Collins, executive director of the Academic Enrichment Unit at Delaware State University (Leadership Award Recipient).

The guest speaker for the event was Anna Weitz, president of Reading Area Community College in Pennsylvania.

Since 1973, the Delaware ACE Women’s Network has been committed to the advancement of women leaders in higher education. 

For more than 25 years, DAWN has provided information and counsel to constituencies within the higher education community regarding policies, issues, education and research that influence women’s equity, diversity and advancement.

DAWN provides national leadership in advancing women to executive positions on campus and serves as a national voice for women in higher education. Staff members also work in collaboration with associations and other groups in higher education on ways to improve the status of women. 

DAWN’s mission is to advance women’s leadership by:

  • Identifying women leaders nationally in higher education through extensive networks;
  • Developing women’s leadership abilities through state and national programming;
  • Advancing more women into senior-level leadership positions by nominating them and working with search firms on placement; and
  • Supporting the tenure of mid- and senior-level women administrators and presidents throughout their careers.
