June 6-9: Food and culture series

The 20th annual June Lecture Series at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UD in Wilmington will be held June 6-9. Titled 'June a la Carte,' this year's program focuses on great political documents, feminism, world politics and a Newark cuisine sampler.

The topic of French’s talk is “Diversifying Your Communication Portfolio:  Effective Communication Across Contexts,” and the presentation is sponsored by the communication department with support from Fountainhead Press.

Increased competition in the job market and increased costs of recruiting and training employees have led to significant changes in job requirements.  One of the most challenging expectations is that new employees possess communication skills geared toward effective communication in many contexts and with diverse individuals, said Tracey Holden, UD assistant professor of communication.

These skills are increasingly expected of students while still undergraduates, Holden said, adding that communicating effectively in multiple settings demands a high level of knowledge, skill and quick thinking.

Students often see diversity as something done by administrators, but the communication skills for engaging diversity effectively are valuable at any stage of development.

“The ability to engage effectively with others and present a coherent, articulate plan of action is at the heart of truly excellent communication skills,” Holden said. “We are excited that Dr. French’s expertise in this area will be the focus of her presentation to our students. While we discuss and practice these skills in our COMM 212 classes, Dr. French offers a practical and results-oriented approach for students to use at every level.”
