To improve security, UD is turning off direct RDP and VNC access to campus systems

3:52 p.m., Nov. 6, 2014--On Monday, Nov. 10, the University of Delaware will begin blocking direct RDP (Windows Remote Desktop Protocol) and VNC (Apple remote desktop) access to on-campus computers.

This change does not affect access to central resources (e.g., UD email, UDSIS, Sakai, Canvas, and so on).

2FA protects you

If you are using two-factor authentication (2FA), even if a hacker has your password, your information is probably safe.

Some UD employees have been using RDP, VNC, or similar software to log in to individual UD computers. 

Instead of logging in directly using remote desktop software, University staff, faculty and students should use the AnyConnect VPN client software to connect to the UD Network. Then they can connect to a UD computer, including systems located in faculty and staff labs and offices, using remote desktop software.

It has become necessary to block this form of access because attacks via the network ports used by remote desktop software have risen dramatically.

The AnyConnect VPN software is easy to install and works on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and iOS and Android devices. (Directions)
